The oldest Taiko group in North America and the grandparent of almost every other group in the western hemisphere is the world famous San Francisco Taiko Dojo . Founded over 35 years ago by Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka, SFTD has set the pace for all others to follow. Please visit them at:

The oldest professional Taiko group in the western world is San Jose Taiko . SJT, as they are known, was formed 30 years ago and has performed throughout the world. SJT is famous for precise drumming, dazzeling choreography and masterful onstage transitions. Please visit them at:

Named after one of the most beautiful cherry blossom trees in Japan, Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble (SYTE) seeks to expand the traditional boundaries of Japanese taiko drumming as well as explore and develop work that incorporates the art of taiko with other genres of performance art. The Emeryville Taiko Group has been around the San Francisco Bay Area, under one name or another, since the late 1980s. It was originally formed by Master Seiichi Tanaka as the Oakland Children's Group, but has split off and reformed under head instructor Susan Horn. Susan-san was a student of Master Tanaka's for 15 years.

In its present form and location, E'vill (as they like to be called) is one of the few groups who have their own private Taiko studio. Under the capable guidance of Sensei Susan Horn, the group has grown in size and stature. Visit them at:

Wadaiko Newark is a new Taiko group in the East San Francisco Bay area city of Newark. Wadaiko Newark is affiliated with the Newark Unified School District and teaches both adult and childresn Taiko classes. All classes are taught through the school district and are open to the public.
